The Roles of Vitamins and Supplements
Vitamins and minerals have very important roles to play in the nutritional requirements of our bodies. They help in digesting foods, maintain healthy skin, bones and eyes, and maintain the good condition of our immune system.
Eating fruits and vegetables is important because it is the main source of vitamins and minerals. If you undergo dieting but found out that it’s not enough, you can drink certain tablet supplements or through injection.
Some examples of foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals are the following:
Vitamin A: This is good for vision, fights infection for our immune system, repairs body bones and tissues. Examples are eggs, beef liver, milk products and green leafy vegetables.
Vitamin B1 (Thiamine): It regulates one’s appetite, helps in assisting our nervous system, heart and other body organs. Examples are pork, seafood, potatoes, oranges and tomato juice.
Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin): It helps in releasing of energy from macronutrients such as fats, carbohydrates, and proteins for the body to use. Examples are dairy products, dark green leafy vegetables, and eggs.
Vitamin C: It functions as an antioxidant; prevent infection, treating common cold and decreases risk of cancer heart disease and others. Examples are tomato juice, strawberries, potatoes, watermelon, bananas, oranges, and others.
Vitamin D: It helps in maintaining levels of phosphorus and calcium in the body and prevents bone diseases. Some examples are the ultraviolet rays of the sun early in the morning, tuna, salmon, sardines, and others.
Vitamin E: It helps in repairing DNA and contributes to our immune system. Some examples are green leafy vegetables, beans, nuts and whole grains.
Calcium: It helps in structuring bones and teeth and protects against hypertension and osteoporosis. Examples are milk, cheese, yogurt and other dairy products.
Iron: It helps in regulating our energy metabolism and our immune system, and most of all, it prevents IDA or iron deficiency anemia. Some examples are fish, eggs, organ meat, beans, dried fruits and green leafy vegetables.
Phosphorus: It is part of RNA and DNA that would help in assisting growth. Examples are meat, fish, eggs, whole grains and others.
These are only some examples of vitamins and minerals but there are many of them that help our body to be in its good function and for us to be strong and healthy.
