Any substance or chemical that supports growth and nourishment in an organism’s body is termed as nutrient. Its main functions are to provide energy for the body, build, repair and sustain body tissues, and regulate bodily processes.
Nutrients are classified into two types: the macronutrients and the micronutrients. Macronutrients are nutrients, which are needed in large quantities while micronutrients are in lesser quantity intake. Carbohydrates, proteins and fats are some example of macronutrients. Calcium, salt and potassium are also classified as macronutrients and sometimes called macro minerals.
Some macro-minerals provide structure and energy to human and animals. Others make the bowel motion efficient and increase the volume and soften the feces.
Micronutrient functions essentially for producing enzymes, hormones and growth and development. According to School and Health, the most common deficiencies in school-age children are due to lack of iron, vitamin A and iodine. Most likely, all the vitamins and minerals belong to micronutrients such as iron, cobalt, zinc, manganese, and selenium.
One of the most common threats in the global health is the lack of these nutrients (micronutrients such as iodine, vitamin A, and iron). Iodine deficiency can cause brain damage. Simple way to prevent such deficiency is the intake of iodine-rich food such as sea foods or iodized salt. Vitamin A deficiency to pregnant women may cause blindness and could increase the risk of maternal mortality. Infections such as measles and diarrheal are some of the effects of vitamin A deficiency or VAD.
The most common nutrient disorder that is widespread all over the world is iron deficiency. This could be worsened by some infections such as malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS. This can be avoided by taking iron supplements or iron-rich foods and going through vaccinations.
Everything has its limits. Even in vitamin and mineral intake. Too much of everything is considerably bad. Seeking professional help is recommended to attain proper mineral intake and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
